FAQs
What is a sliding scale? What does it mean for the community/equity?
A sliding scale is a payment structure where the price of services/goods changes based on an individual’s financial situation.
As we’re aware that therapy can be expensive, you can inquire about using our sliding scale by “pitching” a rate to us based on our standard rates and your personal assessment of your financial needs. We encourage you to use the reflection questions below in your process.
What is a standard rate VS a redistribution rate?
A standard session rate is the market rate of services in the area that we have determined based on the FAIR Health Consumer’s services prices for Baltimore, Maryland (zip code 21202).
A redistribution rate is an optional higher rate per session for people, who after reflecting on their level of financial privilege, choose to opt in. This rate functions to accommodate the clients who are using our sliding scale.
We encourage you to use the reflection questions below to reflect.
Why are we out-of-network (OON) from insurance companies?
We understand that being in-network with insurance makes therapy far more affordable and accessible for potential clients, and the decision to be out-of-network (OON) was one that we made with careful consideration and did not take lightly.
While the OON price of therapy is often higher than in-network co-pays, we believe that the insurance model has hidden costs that can be harmful for both clients and clinicians.
For clients, insurance companies often require specific diagnoses and detailed documentation which can impact client confidentiality and the type and/or amount of care that a client can receive. By operating out-of-network, we hope to provide increased autonomy and privacy for our clients.
For clinicians, huge amounts of unpaid time and labor are dedicated to communicating with insurance companies that offer inconsistent pay and low reimbursement rates. Unfortunately, this system has contributed to the culture of burnout among many mental health professionals, which not only negatively impacts the clinicians themselves, but also the quality of care they can provide to their clients.
By being OON, we hope to be able to shift our attention away from these aspects and focus on providing the best possible care for you and your loved ones. We also hope that the inclusion of a redistribution rate and a sliding scale, which allows us to provide flexible options for clients based on individual needs, can create equity in our services.
Reflection Questions: Sliding Scale
Influenced by Kenya Crawford’s “My Anti-Oppressive Rate Structure”, Britt Hawthorne’s “Embracing An Equitable Sliding Scale,” and Properties of Light’s “Equitable Pricing Model”
Are you or your family homeowners or landowners? Does not apply to those who are Native or Indigenous.
How much generational wealth (property, inheritance, financial support, etc.) do you or will you have access to?
Do you have a safety net composed of "financially stable" or wealthy family and friends?
Does your income currently or is it projected/expected to only support you, and not other loved ones?
Do you have debt? How much debt do you have?
Do you have disposable income?
Have you been able to easily access and afford health insurance for yourself and/or your family members?
Use the above questions along with our standard rates listed above to reflect on your level of financial access and privilege when inquiring about a sliding scale fee or opting into our redistribution rate.
